But that doesn’t feel right - surely if we have choice we are exerting some control and so must have an increased sense of control - if only marginally?!

That’s the long-standing hypothesis stretching back more than 40 years. It does sound intuitively right. It is also something we do with children, for example, guiding their choice towards healthy choices and making them in control of this “Do you want a yoghurt or fruit?” (rather than chocolate).

Similarly in or SCOAP model the C stands for Control which also include autonomy so having a free choice we would also hypothesise increase feelings of control.

But apparently not so.
