Research Hit: How Men's and Women's Brains Are Different

This “men and women’s brain” is a popular theme but a bit controversial isn’t it!?

Yes, indeed, that’s why I did a review in 2022:

Do Men and Women Have Different Brains?

Do Men and Women Have Different Brains?

One particular researcher, Lise Eliot, has claimed, and written scientific well-researched papers and books, claims, and has claimed for a long time there is not a difference.

And she is wrong then?

Well, yes and no. She correctly notes that many structures that had previously been claimed to be different aren’t really - so some of the old clichés are plain wrong. But as I said in my review, this is only half the story - more refined techniques are finding noticeable differences such as in genetic expression.

And this piece just out, that I would like to talk about, tells us also something insightful.

OK, so what is different then?

This is one of a bunch of pieces that are increasingly common using machine learning and artificial intelligence to scan data sets to find differences that human beings can’t see.

Fascinating!

Yes, and this research out of NYU Langone Health / NYU Grossman School of Medicine by Junbo Chen et al. gave us another clear indication of differences.

For this they set machine learning to work on thousands of MRI scans of men and women (471 men, and 560 women). The machine learning tools were correctly able to identify men’s and women’s brains with 92%-98% accuracy!

Wow! That is almost a perfect hit rate!

Depends on what we mean by perfect, but certainly exceptionally high.

What are the differences then according to this research?
