Inflammation is an underlying cause of many, if not the majority, of chronic diseases. This raises the question of whether we are approaching health and disease in the right manner. It also means managing inflammation may be the best approach to be healthy in body and mind.
Mike struggled with depression for his whole life, New Scientist reported in an article in 2016, and then one day it got too much, and he tried to kill himself with prescription pain killers. Medics saved his life but not his depression - he entered into medical treatment, and for the next 15 years he cycled through all sorts of anti-depressants with multiple side effects such as vomiting and insomnia. Nothing worked. In 2010 he got a call from his doctor asking him if he wanted to take part in study for new drug. The interesting thing is that this drug had been developed for Crohn’s disease – gluten intolerance – which leads to inflamed bowels and digestive tract. A week after his first treatment the fog lifted – and he said, “I just sort of woke up”. For the first time he was depression free.
Why had this experimental drug worked, designed for inflammation of the gut, when nothing else had?
